Human Kind is an accumulation of portraiture work by Belgian-American artist Serge Strosberg. Ranging from commissioned portraits to series work of human life, Strosberg encapsulates the human essence. In this exhibition, the artworks shown allude to a grander existence beyond the human form. There is a feeling of uneasiness surrounding the figures in his work, as they stare off into the distance away from the viewer. He creates a metaphorical aura, pulling both the figures in his work and the viewer into another dimension. In his commissioned portraits, he goes beyond capturing one’s physical appearance he creates a narrative for his models, building upon this notion of presence beyond the physical realm. Whether we are looking at a woman smoking a cigarette in Paris or laying by The Seine, Strosberg’s body of work is strong in that it captures snippets of existence. The paintings exhibited are not just individuals posing for the artist, it is the human experience captured in the rawness of time. Through his use of unique mediums such as egg tempera Strosberg highlights the complexities of his characters through his range of light and color contrast. Human Kind is a testament to this wide range, depicting not just the rawness of individuality, but the root of humanity frozen in time.
